Speaking Tree - The Hellishness of other people

Speaking Tree - The Hellishness of other people:

Hell is other people-Jean Paul Sartre

I don’t know if defence minister Manohar Parrikar has read Sartre.  But his remark that sending people to Pakistan was the same as sending them to hell has undertones of the French existential philosopher. Sartre posited the ‘Other’ as one who endowed us with what he called ‘unauthentic existence’, a form of being which negated its own being; I identify myself only by my otherness to the Other.

Actor and former Congress MP, Ramya, took exception to Parrikar’s remark.  Having visited Pakistan, she felt that the place and the people, for all their internal problems such as terrorism, were not all that bad after all.

For her pains, Ramya has had a case of sedition filed against her by a complainant who is the president of an organisation called the Kodagu Praja Ranga.

The episode is one of an increasing number of instances highlighting the climate of what might be called ultra-patriotism that is sweeping the country. The ultra-patriot is someone who seeks to establish a nationalist identity largely based on the demonization of a targeted Other.

The ultimate ultra-patriot was Hitler who sought to give the German people, demoralised by the oppressive terms of the Treaty of Versailles which followed World War I, a resurgent identity based on a fabricated Other, a satanic notional enemy responsible for all Germany’s ills: the Jew.

Hitler’s form of ultra-patriotism, or super-nationalism, led to the unthinkable horror of the Holocaust.

Today, India is witnessing a rise in its own form of ultra-patriotism, a super-nationalism largely derived from identifying oneself through the negative principle of being one who is ‘not-the-Other’. Who is this real or mythical Other we use to distinguish ourselves from in order to validate our own being, who and what we are?
It could be a number of entities or groupings.  Very commonly, as in the case of Manohar Parrikar and the many others who feel the way he appears to do, the hated and hellish Other is the state of Pakistan, which is often accused – not without a measure of justification – of waging a proxy war against us through the export of terrorism.

Pakistan apart, we find other Others  to affirm our own identity as ‘not-the-Other’.  The Other could be a person who eats beef, and who creates an antipodal ‘not-the-Other’ in the self-styled gau raksha, or cow vigilante.
The Other could be someone of a different community, or different caste, or different gender.

Any and all of such real or manufactured differences are used to help ourselves to establish the negative mode of being of the ‘not-the-Other’.
The true opposite of the hated Other is not the ‘not-the-Other’, which is only the mirror image of the Other. The true opposite of the Other is the collective We, the bridge that joins us opposed to the chasm that divides.  ‘How can I transcend into Thee?’ asked Martin Buber.

The question provides its own answer: my wish to transcend my own ego and become one with another being is nothing more, or less, than the capacity for empathy, which is what makes us human, and humane.

Empathy – the affirmation of the commonality of being – is the true opposite of the negativism of the Other.

If we define hell as other people, and vice versa, where should we hope to find the roots of heaven? Not in ultra-patriotism, but in its obverse: a planetarianism that includes all of us in a commonness of being, the We who inhabit Planet Earth.

A small Buddist story

A small Buddist story:

One day, a young boy came into the monastery and asked the Chief Monk, to give him some work and also food.

The Chief Monk asked him: What have you read? What work can you do? What do you know?

The boy replied: I have not read in school. I have no proficiency in any work excepting some stray jobs like washing food plates,
cleaning up the cottage etc., I do not know anything else.

The Chief Monk asked Are you sure you do not know anything else?

The young boy replied: Oh, yes, Sir, now I remember.
I can play good Chess

The Chief Monk said: Oh that's good. Now I shall test you in your game.
He asked another monk to come with chess board and coins and asked a table to be placed so that the game could start.

Before start of the game, the Chief Monk said: Now see, I have a sword on my hand. If any one is defeated, his nose will be severed

The boy became nervous. However, without any other way to go, he agreed.

The game started. Initially, the boy made some mistakes in moves. His position on the board became almost hopeless.

He then concentrated completely on the game and improved the position to a winning level.

Then he looked at the monk sitting opposite and playing. He was not quite nervous but obviously disturbed a little.

The boy then thought,
"I am a useless fellow in life. Nothing will change the world if I lose the game and lose my nose.

But this monk, is well read person, doing meditation and is sure to attain Buddha Hood Why should he lose?

So the young boy deliberately made a wrong move, so that the monk sitting opposite could take advantage and win the game !

The Chief Monk suddenly flashed his sword on the table. All the coins flew into different directions.

He then said: The game is over. Oh boy you are IN. You will be with us in the monastery hereafter.

The boy did not understand.

The Chief Monk explained:
"I did not ask you to play chess to find out your caliber in the game. But I was looking for two essential qualities that are necessary for Self realization.

One is *Maha Prajna*. The Great Awareness. I found that in you. When your game became positionally bad, you put your entire concentration and attention on the game and improved your game.
This is Maha Prajna.

The second is *Maha Karuna* - The Great Compassion. I found that also in you. When your opponent was about to lose the game, you looked at him with great compassion and deliberately made a wrong mistake so that he could win.

These two qualities are adequate to do sadhana and make the life *Meaningful*.
*YOU ARE IN.*

Life isn’t about winning or losing there is nothing to win and nothing to lose.

You can at best enjoy or suffer your limited time called *Life* but enjoyment or suffering is also only a figment of your imagination.

Going beyond enjoyment, suffering, winning or losing is the path that few choose to walk....!!!

These Elements Of A Western Diet Linked To Alzheimer’s Disease

These Elements Of A Western Diet Linked To Alzheimer’s Disease:

Study tests if western diet contributes to the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Poor diet and inactivity probably account for around one-quarter of cases of Alzheimer’s disease, recent research finds.
Diet is a key risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, the main culprits being sweets, meat, fried potatoes, white bread, eggs and high-fat dairy products.
However, a review of the research shows that low-fat dairy products,  fish, beans/legumes, grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s.
Unfortunately the Western diet is on the increase in different cultures, thereby increasing the risk of AD.
For example, the change from the traditional Japanese diet to the Western diet in Japan has proved costly.
After the transition, the Alzheimer’s rates in Japan increased from 1% in 1985 to 7% in 2008.
In addition, a new study on Alzheimer’s incidence from 10 countries suggests a dietary supply of meat or animal products (excluding milk which seems to reduce the risk) has the highest associations with AD.
These 10 countries were the United States, India, Egypt, Mongolia, Brazil,  Cuba, Sri Lanka, Chile, Nigeria and Republic of Korea.
In the United States  everyone has a 4% chance of developing AD showing the nation to be at particular risk.
This is partly because of the Western dietary pattern, which also includes a high consumption of meat.
Dr William B. Grant, the author of this review, said:
“…reducing meat consumption could significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease as well as of several cancers, diabetes mellitus type 2, stroke, and, likely, chronic kidney disease.”
Dr Grant concluded:
“Mounting evidence from ecological and observational studies, as well as studies of mechanisms, indicates that the Western dietary pattern — especially the large amount of meat in that diet — is strongly associated with risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and several other chronic diseases.
Although the traditionalMEDITERRANEAN DIET is associated with about half the risk for Alzheimer’s disease of the Western diet, the traditional diets of countries such as India, Japan, and Nigeria, with very low meat consumption, are associated with an additional 50% reduction in risk of Alzheimer’s disease.”

People Are Happiest At This Unexpected Time of Life

People Are Happiest At This Unexpected Time of Life:

Anxiety and depression peaks at a very surprising point in life.
People get happier with age, new research finds.
Surprisingly, anxiety and depression peak in people’s 20s and 30s, when we are generally thought to be in our prime.
Professor Dilip Jeste, a senior author of the study, talking about older people, said:
“Their improved sense of psychological well-being was linear and substantial.
Participants reported that they felt better about themselves and their lives year upon year, decade after decade.”
Youth adulthood, though, was not the paradise that is often assumed, Professor Dilip Jeste said:
“This ‘fountain of youth’ period is associated with far worse levels of psychological well-being than any other period of adulthood.”
The study’s conclusions come from a survey of 1,546 randomly selected adults in San Diego County.
Conventionally, scientists have assumed that people’s mental health follows their declining physical and cognitive function.
This was certainly not the case in the new research.
Previous findings on this have been mixed, however, Professor Jeste said:
“Some investigators have reported a U-shaped curve of well-being across the lifespan, with declines from early adulthood to middle age followed by an improvement in later adulthood.
The nadir of mental health in this model occurs during middle age, roughly 45 to 55. However, we did not find such a mid-life dip in well-being.”
People are generally found to have better mental health as they get older — but this hasn’t previously been linked to happiness.

Cognitive decline, while noticeable, clearly does not ruin the enjoyment of life for many, Professor Jeste said:
“Some cognitive decline over time is inevitable, but its effect is clearly not uniform and in many people, not clinically significant — at least in terms of impacting their sense of well-being and enjoyment of life.”
There are a variety of reasons why happiness comes with age.
It could be that older people:
  • tend not to ‘sweat the small stuff’,
  • are more wise,
  • regulate their emotions more effectively,
  • retain fewer negative emotions and memories,
  • and make better social decisions.
Dr Michael L. Thomas, the study’s first author, warned of its limitations:
“…like many other investigations of this type, it was a cross-sectional study, and thus a snapshot of data.
Also, there may have been a survivor bias — i.e., less healthy adults do not survive into old age.”
