Jain Temples (3 of 5) - Sonagiri


Sonagiri (Hindiसोनागिरी) about 60 km from Gwalior, has scores ofJain temples of 9th & 10th century on little hills. This sacred place is popular among devotees & ascetic saints to practice for self-discipline, austerity and to attain Nirvana since the time ofChandraprabhu (the 8th Teerthankar), five & half crores of ascetic saints have achieved Moksa from here.

In HindiSonagiri means a mountain ('giri') of gold ('sona').

Bus of Sonagiri Kshetra is available at Sonagiri Railway Station. Road – On Dabra-Datia Road Sonagiri stands, Kshetra is 5 km ahead from here. This also lies on Gwalior-Jhansi Road. Tempo & Tongaes are available here for Kshetra. Train – Sonagiri Railway Station lies on Agra-Jhansi line. Kshetra is 3 km ahead from here. Airport – Gwalior & Jhansi.
