Fascinating desert tribes, festooned camels, princely fortresses, and airy palaces of marble and onyx are the enchanting lure of Rajasthan. We bring you into this colorful world with a sunset dune walk and camel ride amid herders’ camps at the legendary Nagaur (or Pushkar) Cattle and Camel Fair, a rickshaw ride through the markets of elegant Jaipur, and an exquisite sunrise viewing of the Taj Mahal. You’ll also enjoy game viewing in Ranthambhore National Park, a former maharaja’s hunting ground and a great place to search for elusive Bengal tigers in the wild. From the hilltop forts and glorious palaces of Jaipur to the tangled lanes of the blue-hued medieval city of Jodhpur, this is an unforgettable taste of India.

Days 1-4
Delhi / Agra / Fatehpur Sikri / Ranthambhore
From Delhi, we head to Agra and rise early to see the Taj bathed in sunrise’s soft light. In evocative and perfectly preserved Fatehpur Sikri, we explore its exquisite palaces and courtyards en route to our deluxe tented camp at Ranthambhore, where on game drives you’ll search for tigers as well as other wildlife, including 300 species of birds.
Days 5-6
Jaipur
Our journey brings us to Jaipur, an 18th century city of pink sandstone. You’ll weave through the narrow lanes and lively outdoor markets, and explore the splendid City Palace, with its lavish, frescoed interiors. In a nearby valley, visit the mighty Amber Fort, a Rajput hilltop stronghold fortified by natural hills and high ramparts. Our hotel, the Rambagh Palace, former home of the Maharaja of Jaipur, gives you a taste of the royal life.
Days 7-8
Pushkar or Nagaur Fair
Rajasthan’s flamboyant fairs are a feast for the senses and a riot of color, song, and dance. At this festive gathering, we enter by camel and later enjoy a sunset walk through the dunes among the traders and camel camps. Overnights at a superb tented camp.
Days 9-11
Jodhpur
Explore mighty Mehrangarh Fort, perched atop a steep rocky eminence rising over the desert valley, and walk through Jodhpur’s spice and textile markets. Depart on Day 11 or join our extension to Rohet, Ranakpur, and romantic Udaipur.

What the Trip is Like
This trip is Level 1+, Easy. It is a comfortable, vehicle-based sightseeing trip. Accommodations include comfortable, modern hotels reflecting the traditional architecture of Rajasthan as well as former palaces and royal residences that have been converted into luxurious heritage hotels. At our tented camp at the Pushkar Fair, we sleep in Rajasthani-style air-conditioned tents furnished with cots and en suite facilities. There are some long days of driving on rough, bumpy roads.
An optional early morning camel ride is offered at the Pushkar or Nagaur fair for an “above the crowd” view of the activities around the fairgrounds as the day begins. Anyone participating in this optional activity must acknowledge the inherent dangers in riding and agree to accept any and all risks.
Please remember that travel in India is an intense experience. The essential requirements are flexibility, a sense of humor, curiosity, enthusiasm about new peoples and places, and an openness to the unexpected.
