Why do Indians stare at other people?
I am pure-blooded South Indian. I just have light skin and eyes. I grew up in New York and speak with an American accent.
Mostly New York, but with a small amount of Florida (Sometimes I say "y'all" instead of "youse") and Midwest (I went to nursery school through first grade there.
I first started speaking English in Ohio.) My native language is Tamil, which I speak with a thick American accent).
My wife grew up in Bangalore. I get stared at all the time when I am there. It is obvious to me that they think I'm Caucasian.
When I'm walking around in public with my wife, she getsdirty looks. Looks that say, "Why did you marry a white guy when there are so many good South Indian guys?"
When I go out to dinner with my wife, the waiters stare at me during the whole meal, and universally put the check in front of her.
Virtually everywhere else they give it to me, being the man. (Although don't get me started on that one.) My wife told me that the reason for that is that she is seen as the local outsourcing worker, and I am the foreign client being taken out to dinner.
Then I open my mouth and speak Kannada with a local accent. Then I really get stared at. There have been occasions that someone has said something "not cool" to my wife (Possibly thinking I am the foreign client again. *sigh*) in my presence and I have let them have it in Kannada.
Why all these? I appear different. It is obvious I pique their curiosity. I might get offended, but, being a South Indian-American man, I have been familiar with this from a very early age.
