Indian tourists don't require any special permit to visit Leh. However, they would be only required to show their government id proofs at check posts if visiting Dah and Hanu, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Loma Bend, Nubra Valley and Tangyar. However, if you are to visit places like Chushul, Hanle etc. Inner Line Permit, will be required.
HolidayIQ Traveller Shishadri Sanketi says, "There is a requirement of permit to visit the surrounding areas i.e. Pangong tso, tso moriri, nubra, khardung-la etc. The permit can be arranged through the hotel owner. I would advice other travellers to contact the owner, couple of days prior to arrival and tie-up for the permit."
HolidayIQ Traveller D says, "The temperature is below 10 degree and you have to carry a lot of woollens to keep u warm; especially at night the temperature dips to very low." Adds HolidayIQ Traveller Dinesh, "The temperature is never below 4 degree.C. However late night/early morning the temperature might go upto 6 degree.C. Woollens, over-coats, caps, hand-gloves and woollen shocks are needed, if you are outdoors in evenings or early mornings."
HolidayIQ Traveller Aadarsh Subramani says, "The temperature would dip up to minus 21. The Oxygen level was also very low. But we somehow managed by drinking lots of water." "It is necessary to drink lots of water and fluids to avoid dehydration. You need to breathe more to compensate for low oxygen at high altitudes. It is the only place in the world where you could have a frost bite and a heat stroke in the same day. Drink more water," adds HolidayIQ Traveller Janak Mistry.
HolidayIQ Traveller Janak Mistry says, "As the location is high above the sea level, it is necessary to protect the skin from the UV rays, as they are more powerful than what we have at the sea levels. There is a common notion to have some rum or vodka in the cold weather but it surely is not advisable on the high altitude. It is necessary to be fit physically and carry proper medications to avoid collapse due to high altitude sickness." Adds HolidayIQ Traveller Dhairya Shah says, "It is heated during the day during summers, so apply a sunscreen lotion and carry drinking water."
HolidayIQ Traveller Dhairya Shah says, "Charge your gadgets completely, especially the camera and torch if you're going to stay for the night. Take loads of pictures, buy a higher memory card or carry one extra in case needed." Adds HolidayIQ Traveller Shubham, "You must carry a good camera, as you would fall in love with the pictures you'll capture there."
HolidayIQ Traveller Ruchi Parekh says, "Carry enough cash as there are only 2 ATMs with long queues and people hardly accept credit cards."
HolidayIQ Traveller Ruchi Parekh says, "Mobile networks are a mess. Do not expect your cell phones to keep you connected." Adds HolidayIQ Traveller Bharat Salian, "There is no mobile network which I feel is a boon."
HolidayIQ Traveller Varun Guru says, "Gesmo Cafe on Fort Road is a must try for food." Adds HolidayIQ Traveller Girish Belwal, "Main Bazar has a decent selection of mid range Tibetan styled restaurants. In the summer numerous garden restaurants spring up in Changspa serving Tibetan, Western, and Indian dishes. Also, OpenHand Shop and Cafe around the Old Fort Road has good South African, and Continental Cuisine. The place also has good western coffee. Don't miss Happy World Restaurant, situated in the corner of Zangsti Road, and Fort Road beside the rivulet. All types of food, and they are really good."
HolidayIQ Traveller Janak Mistry says, "If you are driving down it should not be that tough compared to a ride on a motorcycle. It is necessary to carry a complete tool kit along with a spare tyre tube, bulbs, spark plugs and any other spare part you think might be worth carrying. It would be worth carrying that extra item and bring it back than to repent on the way in between nowhere."
