Choose carefully the season and weather to go

It is nice to have a 10km walk there with open spaces and nice lookouts. Important to check the air quality before going. My latest trip there was quite a pity because it was hazy and the views were a far cry from my 1st 2 visits.

Twice I was there in April, to find that the red dust was too much, or should I say getting worse? It is bad for our health to be breathing in the red dust whipped up by passing horses, and in our last trip there, we have had to breath through a tissue half the time. That is a tad too much. I wanted some exercise to better my health, only to end up breathing in more pollution than Mumbai was regularly offering.

While I was given the impression that it is a hill station and will be cool, I felt it was only some 2-3 degrees cooler than Mumbai, which is hardly any difference. Perhaps at night the place will cool down more. Go with a thin cotton T Shirt, forget about warm clothing.

From now on, I will only go after the monsoon. Hopefully the ground will not be not as dry and dusty.

Coronation Point

Coronation Point is one of the almost 40 look-out points on Matheran. It faces west and overlooks an Adewashi village. You will have a sunset view here, but the best spot for the sunset is further north at Sunset Point.

Just walk in the woods...

Matheran is such a peaceful and relaxing place and it's no wonder that so many people escape the city to visit. You can spend long hours just walking in the dense forest stopping at the various look-out points along the way.

Do be careful of monkeys overhead.

Feed the Monkeys

We encountered monkeys at all the look-out points we visited in Matheran. They were obviously very comfortable around people and happily took whatever food was offered.

However, Matheran was one of the few places in India where we encountered some not so nice monkeys! One was a rather large monkey that came to the porch of our cabin and bared his teeth trying to take our food. Another time was when we were walking in the forest and there were many monkeys overhead in the trees. I had been carrying a plastic bag that seemed to attract them.

Some recommendations for monkey encounters:

Keep track of all the monkeys around you. If you get distracted with one monkey, another may run up to you and try to grab the food.

Don't carry food in the open and don't carry any plastic bags, shiny objects, etc.

If you're walking through a wooded area/forest you may want to carry some kind of walking stick. Be vigilant about the monkeys overhead in trees.

Hold tightly onto your purse, camera, etc. because they are very mischievous - and fast - and
will grab your belongings and run.

Monkey bites are very serious and diseases can be passed through their saliva. If you do get bitten, clean the wound and see a doctor immediately!!

Louisa Point is one of almost 40 look-out points in Matheran. From here, you can see the surrounding hills, valleys, and other look-out points. You can also see Vishalgad and Prabhal forts from Louisa Point.

The views and the forest

The main thing to do in Matheran is to walk or ride a horse to the view points. There are beautiful views of the plains, lakes and mountains around.

As no vehicles are allowed from the entry point called Dasturi Naka. One has to simply walk or hire horses. Its a lifetime experience of going to various points on horseback.
