The 7 Best Stores to Know While Shopping in Lajpat Nagar
So, here’s the good news – a lot of Lajpat Nagar is repetitive in terms of what is being retailed, and there’s barely a price, quality or product difference between one nook and the next. So if you know exactly what stores to hit, you can go in there with a definite purpose.
PS: Be warned, there ain’t no space in here for the timid; put on your aggressive and bargaining best if you care to do more than just have a look-see.
K.C. Creations
If H.P Singh in Nehru Place is too pricey for you, and the lanes of Chandini Chowk too far, K.C. is an excellent middle ground. They’re well-priced for fabrics, and have a giant range spread over three floors. Cottons, blends, prints {3D, geometric patterns, tie and dye, aztec, tribal}, brocades, silks, chanderis and phoolkaris; K.C. can cater to any and every fabric need. Did we mention the evident penchant for Masaba and Manish Arora rip-offs? Fair warning: The owner and his staff have a reputation for being rude to their customers; don’t let that bother you, channel your inner loud Punjabi and get the job done.

Price Point: Depends on what fabric you want
Vastra or Istri Vastra
We mention two names because even the store staff seems to be confused, but you’ll be safe calling it just Vastra. Tucked away in the corner of a by-lane, open on two sides, Vastra has little to no branding, and is easy to miss. As luck would have it, it’s a fairly popular store, so asking around always proves fruitful. Another haven for any kind of fabric, we especially recommend their collection of whites, and line of neon fabrics. From chikan work, white-on-white detailing and delicate laces, to funky neon prints and georgettes, if you get standing room in the store, don’t give it up for ANYTHING.

Ghoonghat Dupatta
Vastra’s next door neighbour, Ghoongat makes buying Indian clothes a lot easier and allows versatility, with an exhaustive range of patiala salwars and dupattasthat you can mix and match. Their chunnis are available in a range of colours and styles, including the ever popular crinkled variety with gold piping, the simple chiffon in solid colours, and chunnis with block printing.

The Prakash Collection
Hands down our favourite store! They specialize in borders and trimmings, and house any and every kind you can conceive of. Think Sabyasachi inspired, phoolkari, kundan, zari, Rajasthani, Parsi, cutwork, Swarovski-encrusted, and laser cut borders. What most people don’t do is venture into their basement, since the borders tend to be a bit of a sensory overload. Big mistake. The basement is a treasure chest for studs, stones, beads, pearls, collars, resources for DIY necklaces, and every type of button and zip. For every Forever 21 and Zara bought studded top, we can bet some of the studs have fallen off over time, and if you’re in the market to be able to replace them, Prakash is your answer.

Vikas Matching Corner
Not the friendliest bunch over at Lajpat Nagar, Vikas specializes in matching parts of an outfit together, from kurtis, salwars and dupattas, to churidaars and skirts. All you’ve got to do is arrive with any one of the above, and they’ll match all its counterparts. You can put together an outfit from scratch, but their line of clothing is very basic and understated, so we recommend arriving with one statement piece, so they can pick neutral basics to match.

Jooti Stalls
Since the branding was a tad questionable, we’re calling them the triad of shoe stores. Bang opposite KFC, stalls number 12, 13 and 14 are Lajpat Nagar’s hotspot for juttis, kohlapuris and other Indian inspired flats for men, women and children. The stores offer more or less the same in terms of design {thread work, cutout, solid colours and embellished}, styles and price ranges. There does exist a certain competitive streak between the 3 stores, so if you’re in the mood for a little theatrics, you can feign disinterest in one, to get yourself a better rate at the next one.
Where: Opposite KFC, Veer Savarkar Marg Road
Price Point: Starts at INR 150
Salwar Lane
Opposite 3C’s Cineplex, this lane has on offer a massive range of pre-stitched, semi-stitched and unstitched salwar suits. They stock salwar suits primarily in cottons, crepes, georgettes and other basic, lightweight fabrics. Although mass-produced and not of the greatest quality, if you sift carefully, you can get lucky with some great salwar pieces for everyday wear. This lane also houses majority of the tailors and dyers, for a quick alteration or dye-job.
Where: Pushpa Central Market, Lajpat Nagar
Price Point: Starts at INR 500 for a salwar suit.
