History:
However, during the wars fought between the years 1377-78, the kingdom was ruined due to the conflict between the of Muthu Veerappa Nayak and Tirumal nayak. Hyder Ali of Mysore took over the reigns of Coimbatore in the year 1799.
Earlier known as Kongunad, the name Coimbatore was rechristened by the British. In many parts of the Coimbatore, it is still referred through its native name – Kovai.
In the later part of the 18th century, due to the fall of Tipu Sultan, the city came under the territory of the East India Company and remained under the British governance till India’s independence in 1947. Coimbatore is popular for playing a significant role in the movement of independence.

Bus
Buses in Coimbatore play to every known location in and around the city. The minimum bus fare in Coimbatore is Rs 5, though deluxe buses that have been recently launched can cost more. Fares will not normally cross Rs 25 to 30, and semi deluxe luxury buses are available for transport too.
Auto Rickshaw
Auto rickshaws are a preferred mode of transport for tourists, as this mode of travel is quicker and faster. However, auto rickshaws in Coimbatore do not run on meter and they may charge any amount that they deem fit. For this reason, it would be prudent on your part to be familiar with the general local rates before boarding one. There are no separate night fares.

Kovai Kutrallam
: It is 35 kms from the Coimbatore city and 5 kms from Alandurai Village.
This Perennial waterfalls is located in Siruvani zone, along the western ghat forest
zone. It is situated within dense forests and thus visitors are not permitted after
5 pm. Because of scarce transport system, advance planning is suggested.
Noyyal River : It starts from Velliangiri
Hills and originally it was called Kanchinadi. This is
a sacred river that flows through near Perur Temple and rituals are performed here.
Siruvani Water Falls and Dam : Siruvani Waterfalls and the dam is located 35 km on the west of Coimbatore city along the Western Ghats. It is an enchanting location for the tourists. The reservoir at Siruvani was built by the Government of Kerala, funded and used by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University :
The University is just 5 kms from the city. The effort for Agricultural Education
started with Agricultural School as early as 1868 and
the journey resulted in establishing this Tamil Nadu Agricultural University
in the year 1971 with Coimbatore as its
Head Quarters. It has UG, PG and Research courses on various subjects of Agriculture.
It is graded as one of the best of its kind in the South Asian Nations.
Forest College and Research Institute :
It is located at an altitude of 300m, 40 kms from Coimbatore on the Kotagiri Road.
The Forest College and Research Institute (FC & RI) is
located at Mettupalayam in the Jakanari Reserved Forest, in an area of
200ha of reserved forest, at the foothills of Nilgiris. Basic and Applied

G.D.Naidu Industrial Exhibition : Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu popularly called as G.D.Naidu was an Indian inventor and engineer. He was a versatile genius for his Simple, Innovative and Effective engineering inventions for which he was also called as the Edison of India.

Temples
Perur Temple : It is a Popular Siva Temple.
The Sanctum – Sanctorum of this Temple was built by Karikala Cholan.
Saivaite Saint Sundarar sang hymns in praise of the Lord here. The famous
Kanaka Sabhai was built by Alagadri Nayak
of Madurai in the 17th century. The Swami and Amman Temples were renovated
in the Middle of the 18th century. Panguni Uthiram [Mar-Apr]
is a colourful festival celebrated with fun and fare. A “Treasure Trove”
of Roman coins found during excavations indicates the historical connection
of this area with the Roman period ,
Maruthamalai Temple : This Abode of Murugan, 12 kms from the city on a hillock on the Western Ghats, is dedicated to Lord Dhandapani. There is a small cave called as “Pambatti Sidhdhar Gugai”. Bhavani : The Sangameshwarar
Temple at Bhavani is located at the confluence of rivers Bhavani , Kaveri
and ‘Agaya Gangai’ [ invisible water source]. This is also called
as the Triveni [confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and invisible
Saraswathy river-Allahabad] of the south. Legend Says : William Garrow
the then Collector of
Coimbatore worshiped the Goddess Vedanayaki regularly. One
Night, Goddess appeared in
his dream and asked him to vacate the Bungalow. Immediately
after moving out the house
it collapsed. To show his gratitude, he donated an
ivory cradle with his signature. The same can be seen even today
in the Temple.
Vaidehi fall: It is located 35 Kms from
Coimbatore and the nearest village is Narasimhapuram. It is also called as Narasimhapuram
Falls. This waterfall used to be called "Tholayiram Murthi Kandi".
In Tamil: Tholayiram = 900, Murthy = Lord or Manifestations, Kandam[
water pot of Ascetic]. Though it is a popular tourist spot, it falls short of transport
facilities. Appearance of Wild Animals also have prevented the authorities permitting
tourists to this area.
Tiruppur
: It is located on the banks of Noyyal River, 50 kms from
the City of Coimbatore. It is known as the "knitwear capital"
which accounts for 90% of India's cotton knitwear export. It has spurred up the
textile industry in India for the past three decades and provides nearly 6,00,000
jobs. Special Industrial Parks have been developed in Tirupur. Exports recorded
as US $ 3.2 billion for the period 2014-15.
Bethesda International Prayer Center :
It is 25 kms from the City, amidst the Siruvani Hills. Bethesda International
Prayer Center was established by Dr.G.S.Dinakaran. The area was
named as Karunya Nagar. The prayer center is surrounded
with hills, waterfalls, green pastures and rivulets
which provides peaceful atmosphere for prayer and meditation. It has an artistically
designed Dome too. Accommodation facility is available for visitors to stay overnight.

Palani : It is located at an altitude of 150m , 100 kms from Coimbatore. One of the special Abode of Murugan called Arupadaiveedu. Built by King Cheraman Peruman. Murugan is called as Dandayuthapani. The special feature of the main deity is that, it is made of Nava Pashanam or Nine Herbal poison [processed - and poison removed]. It is one of the Sidha Elixirs available for us. Electrically operated Winch service is available to transport devotees up the hill. Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram are important festivals of this temple.
Bannari : 300 years ago this was known
as Dhandanyakkan forest and it is popularly called as “BANNARI”.
Temple of Bannari Mariamman located here is, 14 kms from
Sathyamangalam. Elephants, Wild pigs, Bears, Deer,
Hares, Monkey and Peacocks are found in the nearby forest area.
Special buses are operated from Sathyamangalam and Coimbatore on festival days and
holidays.
Kodumudi : It is 40 kms from Erode and
105 kms from Coimbatore. The special feature of this town is : Lord Siva Called
Muchukundeswarar, Vishnu called as Veera Narayan
Perumal and Brahma are installed as
Trinity, in the same temple complex and it is one of the
important temple of the District. 10 day Chithirai Utsavam
[April-May] and Panguni Uthiram [Mar–Apr] are most important
festivals of the temple. Turmeric and Sugarcane are the main crops of this
village. Rice Mills and Paper Mills too are located here.
Pollachi : This town is about 40 kms
from Coimbatore and an important Commercial Hub. Tender and ripe coconuts are sent
to different parts of the Country from here. . Hence it is called as “Coconut
City” too. Asia’s largest Jaggery market
is located here. This area has a pleasant climate due to its proximity to the Western
Ghats. Popular Mariamman and Lord Subhramnya temple is the religious attraction
of this town.
Avinashi : It’s old name is pikkoigul. It is believed and called as the Varanasi of the South. The Avinashi Lingeswarar temple located here was built by Sundarapandiyan and visited by Saivite Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar. This is one of the most popular temples of this District for its Architecture.
Valparai : It is 100 kms from Coimbatore and 60 kms from Pollachi. Azhiyar – Valparai route has 40 hair pin bends. It is a Hill Station located at an altitude of 3500ft on the Anamalai Hills Range of the Western Ghats landscaped with Tea Plantations, remaining area is the out of bound virgin forest zone.

Wildlife Santuary : It is located at an altitude of 1400 meters at the
Top Slip. This was notified as Wild life Sanctuary in the year 1974 and
established in the year 1976. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi
visited this area during 1961. Later on renamed in honour of the former Prime Minister
and it is now called as INDIRA GANDHI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY and
NATIONAL PARK. The National Park is 108 sq.kms in the core
area of the total 958 Sq. Kms sanctuary zone. This was declared as Project
Tiger in the year 2008. Elephants, Gaur,
Tiger, Panther, Sloth Bear, Pangolin, Black Headed Oriole, Green Pigeon and Civet
cat can be seen in this Sanctuary. Karian and Anaikunthi Sholas, Grass Hills,
Waterfalls, Groves, Teak forests, Estates, Dams and Reservoirs
add beauty to Anamalai Hills and attracts visitors in large numbers. Elephant Safari
and Van services are available at the Top Slip to take the tourists around the Sanctuary.
Solaiyar Dam : This dam is 20 kms from
Valparai and second largest rock dam in Asia. This is the Deepest dam with a Storage
capacity of 165 ft. The Solaiyar dam is actually split into two reservoirs. One
is called the Upper Solaiyar dam with an access and
the other called the Lower Solaiyar Dam deep in the Jungle.
Parambikulam – Aliyar Dam project : Parambikulam Dam though it is in Kerala, it was built during Kamarajar Rule and operated by the Government of Tamil Nadu . It ranks number one in India as well as in the top ten embankment dams in the world in terms of water volume. Parambikulam – Aliyar projects interconnected by tunnels and canals from Parambikulam, Aliyar, Solaiyar, Thunakadavu, Thekkadi and Palar Rivers from different points and at different elevations. This is a show case of an excellent engineering expertise.
Nirar Dam : It is 15 km from Valparai utilised for both irrigation and hydro electric power production. There is a famous waterfall situated near this dam, which resembles the Silver Cascade Waterfalls in Kodaikanal. Heavy rain is experienced during June – July monsoon season months.
Monkey Falls : It is 65 kms from Coimbatore on Coimbatore-Pollachi-Valparai Highway. It is a refreshing natural falls, that attracts both Children and Elders. Entry fee of Rs.20/- charged per head to visit the falls.
Topslip : Picturesque locality at an
altitude of 240m of the Anamalai Hills is 37 kms from Pollachi. Top Slip can be
reached only by road. There is a Tree Hut available as
watch tower for thrill seekers. Sanctuary has accommodation for overnight stay.
Local Transport is also available to go around the sanctuary.

are conducted in the months of Adi (July-August) and Thai (January-February).
Avanasilingeswarar : It is 40 kms from
Coimbatore. Saivaite Saint Sundaramurthi Nayanar through
his “Thevaram” restored a young boy killed by a Crocodile
to life in this place. The Temple is also known as Dakshina Varanasi
and Tiruppukkozhiyur. Tirumoolar, Arunagirinathar and Manikkavacakar
have worshipped and have sung hymns in praise of the god here . The temple
has a 100 ft Tall Tower [Rajagopuram].
Dyanalingam : This is located at the
Foot Hill of Velliangiri 30 kms from Coimbatore. The Lingam Measuring 13' 9" is
the largest mercury based Lingam in the world. All the aspects of life are enshrined
in the form of seven chakras energized to the very peak and locked. It is a doorway
to enlightenment and spiritual liberation. Avudaiyar is made of
a single granite stone 9 ft in diameter. This does not ascribe to any particular
religion or faith.
Sri Ammanalingeswarar
Temple is located on the hillock of Thirumoorthy Hills and nearer to
Thirumoorthy Dam. It is 40 kms from Coimbatore and 20 kms from
Udumalpet on the Palani Coimbatore Highway. There is a perennial stream and water
near the Ammanalingeswarar Temple. The crocodile Farm at Amaravathi Dam established
in 1976 is the largest Crocodile nursery in India. It is 1 km before the Amaravathy
dam site and 25 kms from Udumalpet. The Park and
Crocodile farm
are open every day between 9.00 A.M. and 6.00 P.M.
Masaniamman Temple : It is 45 kms from Coimbatore between Pollachi and Palakkad. Masaniamman, the Village God, is the Family Deity for many. It is located at the backdrop of Anamalai hence it is popularly called as Anaimalai Masaniamman Koil. Tuesdays and Fridays attract more ladies to this temple. The annual Kundam Festival celebrated here is a major festival of the temple.
