Khajuraho dance festival, organised by the Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad, is a one week long festival of classical dances held annually against the spectacular backdrop of the magnificently lit Khajuraho temples in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. From 2010 The Khajuraho Festival of Dance is conducted every year the first week of February from the 1st to the 7th.
This cultural festival highlights the richness of the various Indian classical dance styles such as KathakBharathanatyamOdissi,KuchipudiManipuri and Kathakali with performances of some of the best exponents in the field. Modern Indian dance has also been added recently.[1] The dances are performed in an open-air auditorium, usually in front of the Chitragupta Temple dedicated to Surya (the Sun God) and the Vishwanatha Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, belonging to the western group. [2] [2] [3]
The festival witnesses dance performances by artists of World fame. For the tourists this festival provides refreshment from the day-long hectic tours around the city, in the holy and traditional temple environment.
The Festival 2013 was free,[4] earlier the tickets used to range from Rs.20 on daily basis to Rs.600 for seasonal ticket. The seasonal ticket is for those who plan to attend the festival all throughout the week where as the daily ones are for those who plan to watch 1 or 2 day performances depending on their area of interest. The ticket charges are also dependant on the row you choose to sit. A separate charge of Rs.100 is charged for Camera on per day basis. [5]
