These passenger coaches have been designed by Coach Rehabilitation Workshop (CRWS), located in Nishaputra, Bhopal. The trial consisted of 24 coaches running at the speed of 120 km per hour and Indian Railways might soon introduce these coaches on trains.
Indian railways had launched this project in 2011 to refurbish the interiors of all coaches to create a homely environment during train journeys. West Central Railway (WCR) zone was given the responsibility to design these model coaches.
The plan is to manufacture 111 coaches including 87 non AC coaches, 17 coaches for AC 3 tier, five for AC 2 tier and one each for AC 1 tier and chair car coaches. Once Railway Board clears the report of this trial run, the coaches will be first introduced on ISO certified trains and Rajdhani Expresses. Following this, phase two of luxury coaches will be launched. CRWS will also manufacture executive class chair car coaches for Shatabdi Express.
Additionally, with the aim of eliminating direct discharge of human waste on railway tracks, Indian railways is also replacing toilets in coaches with environment-friendly bio-toilets.
Here are some of the notable features of these coaches:
1. They are spacious, have bigger side berths and are equipped with jerk-less seats.
Side berths also have snacks tables unlike train coaches currently being used. Additionally, the seats will be made of poly vinyl material, thus being fire proof.
