History of Goa



The history of Goa is as colorful as the land is. It is a long tale to tell with exciting ups and downs. It stretches back to 3rd century BC. It was ruled by various rulers like Mauryan Empire, Satavahana dynasty of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, Chalukyas of Badami, Silharas, Kadambas, Chalukyas of Kalyani, Yadavas of Devgiri and various others.
The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century in Goa conquering it from the Muslims. After independence, Goa became a Union Territory of the Indian Union. On 30th May 1987 it attained Statehood. Konkani, the Mother tongue of Goa was included in Indian constitution in August 1992. Below is the history of Goa from third century to the recent years.
The earliest settlers in Goa were the proto-australoids or austro asiatics in the frm of Konka, the Kol or Munda tribes, whose remnants still survive in the aborginal element of Goa as the Gauddi, the Kunbi, and the Vellip.
Arvalem Caves, Goa
The nawab of Honnawar, Jamaluddin defeated the Kadambas in a sea battle in the 13th century after which, there was a tussle for control between the Vijaynagar Hindu empire and the Brahmani Muslim Sultanate.
Safa Masjid, Goa
The Portuguese arrived as Merchants with the intention of setting up a colony. They ruled Goa for nearly four hundred years. Forcibly converting residents to Christianity, they imprisonment local leaders and killed others.
Viceroy's Arch, Goa
Jawaharlal Nehru adopted a plan called operation Vijay to free the Portuguese colonies in India. By 11th December 1961, forces were placed at Belgaum, Vapi and Una for attacks on Goa, Daman and Diu to attack on 18th December.
Portuguese surrender to Indian troops
The Goan clergy and military banded together to overthrow foreign rule in 1787 because of the discrimination they faced. The Pinto family of Candolim offered them assistance due to which the revolt came to be known as the Pinto Revolt.
The Goa Congress Committee was founded by Dr.T.B.Cunha in 1928. Others such as P.P. Shirodkar and Suryakant Naik celebrated Independence Day annually on 26th January. In 1945 Purshottam Kakodkar founded the Goa Seva Sangh.
The renowned Indian socialist leader, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya brought matters to a climax. 18th June 1946, was launched the direct action movement. Lohiya recommended that groups of goan people could offerSatyagraha.

After 19th december 1961, Major General K. P. Candeth, took over as the military Governor of Goa and set about drawing Goa into the indian mainstream. In December 1962 general elections were held seats in the legislative assemby and Lok Sabha.
After the elections, the major concern was whether to keep Goa separate or to merge it with the Indian state of Maharashtra. The Opinion Poll was held on 16th of January 1967 and led to the decision of declaring the retention of Goa's individual status.
The first elections on 3rd Dec. 1963 saw the MGP coming to power with Bhausaheb Bandodkar the first chief minister being succeeded by his daughter Shashikala. When the congress came to power, Pratap Singh Rane took over the position.
