Major Cities In Goa
Besides these cities, Goa has many other important Towns such as Calangute, Porvorim, Bicholim, Sankhelim, Pernem, Sanvordem, Sanguem and Colva. Most of the towns in Goa started out as villages witha center around which the village grew. Today many have grown commercially and in numbers of residents to qualify as townships. Below is a list of the cities of Goa with a brief description of each.
Mapusa lies at a distance of 13 kms. from Panaji. It's proximity to many beaches makes it a suitable base for tourists. Mapusa is famous for its weekly Friday market where people from surrounding villages and towns often come to buy and sell.
The city of Panaji lies 33 kms. from Margao. Panaji means “Land that never floods”. It is located on the southern bank of Mandovi river. Panaji is the catital of the state of Goa has many mansions that are remnants of the portuguese era.
The city of Margao is located 33 kms. from Panaji. Apart from being the headquartes of South Goa, Margao is an important commercial hub. Madgaon station located on the outskirts of the city is the most important railway station in the state.
Ponda is a small town in central Goa and is located 29 kms. from Panaji. Ponda is famous for its temples such as the Shanta Durga, Mangueshi, Ramnathi, Mahalaxmi, Nageshi and Navadurga temple and one of the oldest mosques.
The city of Vasco is a port city that grew around the Mormugao harbor and lies at a distance of 30 kms. from Panaji The city has beautiful and extensive avenues laid out pretty much in a straight line along parallel roads interlinked by small lanes.
