Guwahati keeps the various locations of tourist interest along with some places of historical importance, several heavenly places with a wide range of entertaining activities.  This city is in the close vicinity of various national parks, institution, sports complexes, traditional shopping centers, and places with the cultural diversity.  The city is with the range of 200 km from above mentioned places of tourist interests.  A wide and long, beautiful background of hilly terrain in Guwahati also provides better opportunity for tourism. 
Here are some places which are must to visit in Guwahati:
Assam State Museum
In Assam state museum, a wide range of archaeological things are displayed.  Thesearticles tell the history buried in that particular area.  This museum is located in the middle of the city.  Various stone and copper plates having older inscriptions are of 5th Century even some of them are 3 centuries BC too.  A statue of “Surya”, assumed of 12th century is also there, samples of soil and several ancient costumes which were in vogue at that time are neatly preserved in that museum.  The museum is self sufficient to tell the story of older period and connect the visitors from history.

Umananda Temple
This temple devoted to Lord Shiva and located on an island in the center portion of Brahmaputra. This temple is standing on the beach of Brahmaputra at a very steep edge and forms a vivid condition rather that the devotion part involves with the temples.  For reaching to this visiting place, some ferries and stemers/motor boats sails from Umanada Ghat, the way lies alongside the State Bank of Indiaand ends upto Ashoka Hotel.

Kamakhya Temple
The strong hill named Nilachal leaving the river bank 8 km in west side is the exact location of Goddess “Kali” temple.  This temple is also known as Kamakhya Temple.   The conical shaped, shikhara is very typical and stylish example of architecture.  It is believed that “Sati’s body spread in 51 portions and one of them (Yoni) fell here.  Thelocations where, the body pieces of Sati fell became Shaktipeeth at later stage.  Kamakhya temple is one of them. 

Navagraha Temple
In the eastern side of the city, there is a beautiful temple which is also known as the “Temple of Nine Planets” is one of the best examples of a distinctive Navgraha temple.  This temple is located on top of the Chitrasal (Navgraha) hill. This nice place of astronomy is encircled by the huge sized Devdaar trees.   The dome of this temple is constructed both in steep conical shape with beehive style.  There are totral nine lingams are placed inside the temple each refers a specific planet. The central shivlingam represents the Sun.

Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalashetra
This temple or kalakshetra is located on Shillong road in Panjabari district.  Earlier it was closed due to some reasons but again opened to all for maintaining the cultural diversity of the state.  People offer their devotions through folk dances, musical performances and arts. This temple was in memory of Saint Sankaradeva who was not only a saint but a scholar, social activist and much more than preacher.  He established the Assamese culture with all the reforms needed and launched an era of regeneration of human values during 15th century.  To memorize his contribution towards society, and culture, this Kalakshetra was constructed. 

Janardan Temple
This temple is an example of unity in diversity as the same is constructed in Buddhist and Hindu style of architecture.  This temple is located on a small hill named Shukaleshwar.  This temple is adjacent to Brahmaputra Ghat and also connected through waterways. The renovation of this ancient monument was done  

Assam State Zoo
A short distance of 5 Km from the middle of the city, lead the visitor to the zoo where botanicalgardens and various animals wait.  The zoo is neatly arranged with the view very close to the natural habitat of the animals.   Typical Indian rhino with one strong horn on nose which symbolize the Assam, Leopards and Tigers are some of the animals there.


Pandu
The railway hub Pandu is named on King Pandu.  On the hill top, the fine temple of God Pandunath is located.  It is believed that during exile, Pandavas visited this place and stayed for a long in the costumes of Ganesha.  Statues of all the five brothers, also known as “Panch Pandav” is there.   Statue of God Narsingh, is a little different.    The finest sunset scene can be witnessed in Brahmaputra.
Basistha
There are two temples of Muni Bashishtha, designed in typical Assamese architecture style are located at a distance of 11 Km from Guwahati district. The pleasing waterfall is also seen in route.  These temples are constructed to honor the great author of Ramayna.


Hajo
Hajo is very pretty and small place at a distance of 32 Km from Guwahati.  This place possesses a well recognition in Assamese culture.  This place invites people from all the communities’ irrespective of castes and feelings. A very long zig-zag stair gets the pilgrim to the temple of Hayagriba Mahadeb.  It is believed that Lord Buddha gets Nirvana at this particular place.  A mosque is also built nearby the temple for muslims.  The faith is in the locals that praying in this mosque provides Pao (one fourth) virtuous gain of Mecca. 

Sualkuchi
Sualkuchi is the closest village of Hajo and this is famous for its Hajo's nearby village of Sualkuchi is known for the production of blonde Muga silk.  This is like cottage industry for entire Assam.


Madan Kamdev
At a distance of 40 Km from Guwahati, the tantric temple of Madan kamdev is located.  This temple is devoted to goddess Durga and gets back a visitor in ancient history (in 11th or 12th centuries).  This temple was told to be destroyed once, but the reason is still not known.  Excavation in the larger portion of the temple is still not done but there is amuseum which has various gestures as found in Khajuraho.
