Visvesvaraya Industial & Technological Museum (VITM) is one the most important technological museums in India, situated in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This museum was instituted as part of the centenary celebrations of the Engineer-Statesman Sir M Visvesvaraya (1861-1962).


We are now living in a technology revolutionized world and a visit to this museum will enough to quench your thirst for knowledge and many of your unanswered doubts regarding technological development. It displays everything, A-Z of Industrial & technological revolution. 

It is a unit of National council of science Museums, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, government of India. On 11th November 1962 late Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the museum. 

The 40,000 sq.ft building was later modified or annexed to enlarge the display of galleries regarding modern technology. The objective of the museum is to popularize science through interactive exhibits. VITM is not a ‘museum’ in its classical sense, because it has interactive exhibits than stationary models. 

Each floor of the museum is dedicated to a scientific discipline. More than one million people visit this treasure house of knowledge every year.

Major attractions :

Engine Hall : Engine hall exhibits engines of various automobiles, machines used in industry, a jet air craft engine and other mechanical devices. 

The parts and its functions are displayed and its works are explained clearly to understand even for a new comer to this field. Principle of conservation of energy is convincingly explained through an example of rolling balls. 

The ‘Simple machine’ section has interactive exhibits on levers, pulleys, wheel & axle etc. A new section, ‘How Things Work’ has blown out working models of ball pen, zipper, lock etc.

Electro Technic Gallery : This gallery contains interactive electrical exhibits which work on the basic principles of electricity, electronics and communications. 

Here you can watch the classical experiments like Oersted’s experiment, barlow wheel and Faraday’s ring. A visit to this gallery is a must for all the students of electricity at basic and advanced level and all those who are attracted by marvels of electricity.

Fun Science gallery : On the first floor of the museum exhibits displays on science of sound, Optics, fluids, math and perception. This is a real fun-filled exhibition.

Space gallery : The ‘space gallery is all about satellites and the history of space exploration. The ‘Dinosaur alive’, ‘Bell hall of electronics’ are other displays in this hall.

Science for children gallery : This is specially for children and it help them to enjoy science while learning. There is a giant piano over which they can dance to play music.


A 3D Theater, a mini planetarium ‘Taramandal’ which shoes the full-scale replica of the flyer of Wright brothers. The USA based 3D technology used in the theater is spectacular. 

Another new show at the museum is ‘science on sphere’, where an animated globe uses multimedia to project images of a changing atmosphere.









How to Reach Bangalore

Bangalore, the IT hub of the country and a popular tourist destination of the south India, offers an insight into the golden past of our country. The city is blessed with a beautiful weather and is known for its culture, tradition and wonderful gardens. Those wishing to visit the lovely city of Bangalore won't have any problem as the destination is exceptionally well linked with major cities in the country via air, road and rail. While Bangalore Airport, popularly known as Kempegowda International Airport, is about 36 km away from the city centre, Bangalore City Railway Station and Yeswantpur Junction are within 10 km radius. Those travelling by road from nearby cities and towns can take Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses to reach Bangalore.

By air:
Kempegowda International Airport or Bangalore Airport connects the city with all prime Indian and international cities. Sprawling over an area of about 4,700 acres, it is the third busiest airport in the country after Delhi and Mumbai. AirAsia India, Air India, Jet Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet provide regular services from New Delhi, Mumbai, Patna, Lucknow,Ahmedabad, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad,KolkataSrinagarTrivandrumVaranasi andVisakhapatnam, among others. Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, Emirates, Tigerair, and SriLankan Airlines are some of prime international airlines operating flights for destinations such as London, Colombo, Dubaiand Singapore, to list a few. The airport is about 36 km away from Bangalore city centre and a number of autos and taxis are available easily from outside the airport.

By road:
Bangalore is well connected with various cities via excellent network of state and private buses. While Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) connects the city with maximum nearby places, there are several private buses too that travellers can hop on. There are regular buses available from Goa(557 km), Coimbatore (368 km) and Mangalore(350 km), connecting Bangalore with these cities. Travellers can choose from air-conditioned coaches, luxury buses or state transportation buses, depending upon their budget and requirement. Besides, those who wish to drive to Goa from Bangalore can take NH 4 and NH 63 that connect both these cities in around 11 to 12 hours drive.

By train:


Bangalore City Railway Station (4 km away) and Yeswantpur Junction (10 km away) link the city of Bangalore with all the prime Indian cities including Delhi, Pune, Mysore, Chennai and Mumbai, among others. Trains such as Bangalore Rajdhani and Kongu Express run on a regular basis linking the city with India's capital city, Delhi. Once you reach the station, you can take prepaid taxis or avail local bus services/taxis to get down in the city.


Visiting Time

VITM is opened on all days throughout the year except Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi, from 10 am to 6 pm.

A serious visitor should be prepared to spend at least 3 hours in the museum.
