People Under The Age Of 35 Are At Greatest Risk Of Experiencing Anxiety

People Under The Age Of 35 Are At Greatest Risk Of Experiencing Anxiety

Trending News: Why Do So Many Of Us Have Anxiety?

Why Is This Important?

Because it's not you — it's all of us.

Long Story Short

A new study has found that people under the age of 35 are at a much greater risk of anxiety.

The study also found that people from Western Europe and North America are more likely to suffer from anxiety than people from other cultures.

Long Story

Feeling anxious recently? It turns out you may not be alone.

A new study has identified a number of different groups who are at particular risk of anxiety

And one of them is people under the age of 35. Things get worse if you’re from Western Europe or North America which, let’s face it, is a lot of people who read this website.

The other group at higher risk of anxiety is women, regardless of age.

The extensive review, published today in the journal Brain and Behavior, also highlighted the double burden of anxiety — how it can attack people experiencing other health-related problems.

It’s the result of a synthesis of various studies conducted by researchers at University of Cambridge’s Institute of Public Health and funded by the UK’s National Institute for Health Research.

In total, they drew on 48 reviews to conduct their study.

And it’s unsurprising that such a review turned up some telling results.

Firstly, if you’re in this website’s target audience — that is, if you’re 35 or under — you’re at a greater risk of suffering from anxiety.

Especially if you are from North America in particular, where eight out of 100 people are affected by anxiety, compared to three out of 100 in East Asia.

What else: people with other health conditions are far more likely to experience anxiety disorders.

And again, this is particularly true if you’re in America. One in ten people withcardiovascular disease in the United States suffer from generalized anxiety, and that goes up to one in three if they’re suffering from multiple sclerosis.

But there was one other group majorly affected by anxiety: women. And of any age. In fact, women are almost twice as likely to experience anxiety as men, which is a fascinating and somewhat troubling statistic.

Olivia Remes, first author on the study, pointed out in a press release that part of their purpose of the review was to make health services aware of exactly how common these issues are, and which groups are at greater risk.

Anxiety disorders often manifest as excessive worry, fear and a tendency to avoid potentially stressful situations.

They’re some of the most common mental health problems in the Western world. In the European Union alone, over 60 million people are affected by anxiety disorders in a given year.
