The Ghats of Varanasi
Prashant Jariwala takes us on a visual tour of the ghats of Varanasi.
Steeped in antiquity, Varanasi’s ghats are timeless! The sun bathed steps of archaic havelis are abundant with activities; priests conducting pujas under bright umbrellas, morning ablutions, a game of badminton, graffiti, young postcards wielding sellers or people just enjoying the mild breeze while feeding flour balls to fish.
Meanwhile, in the labyrinth of narrow streets behind the openness of the ghats lie crumbling balconies hanging over the crammed lanes, life perpetuating in every corner and a heady concoction of food and faith weighing heavily on this large expanse. One can’t help but encounter a variety of moods here.
Prashant Jariwala attempts to encapsulate the pulse of the ghats of Varanasi in these pictures:

A common sight on the ghats of Varanasi in the month leading upto Dusherra is small clusters of families performing the ‘pind daan’ for their ancestors. An auspicious period for observing this ritual, the ghats are dotted with tonsured men facing the River Ganga, focused on the rituals being choreographed by a priest. In this the photographer uses a unique perspective in such a way, as to imply that the ancestors are looking from above to receive these offerings.
