6 Scientific Reasons that Vegetarians Make Better Lovers:
Last month, the dating site AYI released information from a study about dating preferences. They found that men were 13% more likely to click on a woman’s profile is she was vegetarian. So, it is pretty clear that men have a preference for vegetarian women. Interestingly, the opposite was true when it came to women: they were 11% less likely to click on a man’s profile if he was vegetarian. It must be remnants of that “meat is macho” mentality. That’s too bad, because there are actually some pretty sound scientific evidence showing that vegetarians make better lovers.
Less Erectile Dysfunction
If you want to be a good lover, then erectile dysfunction is obviously going to put a damper in that. Well, vegetarians don’t have to worry about this problem as much as their meat-eating counterparts. Contrary to former belief, erectile dysfunction is not caused by anxiety. It is a combination of physical and sometimes psychological problems. One of the biggest culprits contributing to erectile dysfunction is heart disease. Studies have found that up to 75% of heart disease patients have erectile dysfunction. A large study released last year found that the vegetarian diet can reduce the risk of heart disease by 1/3, which means less erectile dysfunction as well.
Even without heart disease, a meat eating diet isn’t good for a man’s parts. According to Lee Hitchcox, the author of Long Life Now, the high amounts of saturated fat in meat restricts blood flow and increases blood pressure – both which make it difficult for enough blood to get into the penile vessels.
More Stamina and Energy in Bed
There is no shortage of testimonies from vegetarians saying how much energy they have on their diet. Well, this is actually backed by science too. One study had men peddle on a stationary bicycle until their muscles failed. The men on a high meat diet lasted only 57 minutes. Men on a meat and veggie diet lasted 114 minutes. The men on a vegetarian diet lasted an impressive 167 minutes.
Why did vegetarians last so much longer? Could it be, as Heidi VanPelt-Belle of the Huntington Collage of Health Sciences explains, because vegetables are assimilated into energy by the body faster? This gives vegetarians more energy in and out of bed. Since many people ditch processed foods in their transition to a vegetarian diet, this would also give them more energy than the typical meat eater.
Better Tasting Semen
When porn actress Annie Sprinkle was questioned on the matter, she said that vegetarians taste the best — and this is a woman who has sampled her fair share! Science agrees with Annie. Semen is made up of various components including nutrients like vitamin C and zinc. The foods that men eat do affect the taste of their semen. Because vegetarians tend to eat more fresh fruits, their semen is sweeter. The chlorophyll in foods like celery and parsley also can make semen sweeter. By contrast, red meat is known to make semen taste salty. A word of warning to vegetarian men though: veggies in the cabbage family are high in sulfur and this can make semen taste bad.
Better Smelling
In 2006, researchers at Charles University in the Czech Republic decided to see how diet affected one’s body odor. They had men eat meat diet or a vegetarian diet for two weeks and then took odor samples from their armpits. Then they had the men switch their diets and took samples again. The odor samples were given to women who rated them on level of pleasantness (there is one study I’m glad I didn’t partake in!). The women consistently found that the vegetarian men’s smell was “more attractive”.
Why do vegetarians smell better than meat eaters? One possible reason is because red meat causes toxins to be released into the bloodstream and large intestines, which then make it out through our pores. Another reason is because of the bacteria on our skin. The bacteria love to consume proteins and fats – things are plentiful in meat. So, the bacteria thrive on meat eaters and their waste produces a vile smell.
Soy is Beneficial to Sexual Health
Contrary to what all those people at Weston A. Price Foundation and Mercola are touting, soy does not decrease sex drive, does notcause fertility problems, does not reduce sperm count, and definitely does not cause feminiziation of men. In fact, the opposite is true. There are many studies which show the benefits of soy isoflavones for women, like keeping the vagina lubricated. For men, studies show that soy isoflavones are beneficial for prostate health – which is a key male sex organ. Without a healthy prostate gland, hormones would get out of whack, fertility would drop, and libido would plummet. For more on the truth about soy, I recommend reading the article at Zen Habits.
Increased Libido
Okay, there is a lot of debate about this one, probably because it is difficult to scientifically measure sexual desire. However, there is evidence that the vegetarian diet can increase libido. One study looked at the effect of soy isoflavones on red colobus monkeys. The monkeys had their diet switched to include soy isoflavones. Low and behold! They suddenly started spending less time on grooming and more time copulating. The vegetarian diet is also linked to better mood and mental health (read why here), and mental health is certainly important for a healthy libido.
