Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi's comment that those who want to "eat beef can go to Pakistan" has not gone down well with Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju, who on Tuesday described the statement on cow slaughter as "not palatable".
"I eat beef. I am from Arunachal Pradesh. Can somebody stop me? So let us not be touchy about somebody's practices. This is a democratic country. Sometimes, some statements are made which are not palatable." Rijiju said.
Addressing a press conference after arriving in Aizawl for a two-day maiden visit after becoming Union Minister, Rijiju said that while states having Hindu majority could enact legislation banning cow slaughter, it could not be imposed on northeastern states where a majority of the people eat beef.
Terming the recent statement of Naqvi as "not good", he, however, said that the minister was using his freedom of speech and expression. He said that the cultures, traditions, habits and sentiments of all the people in the country should be respected and honoured.
Naqvi had made that statement last week at Aaj Tak Manthan, a face-off between the ruling and opposition leaders on the first anniversary of the Narendra Modi government
