Health tips - Turmeric, a good substitute for Ibuprofen for Arthritis

Turmeric – better than Ibuprofen for Arthritis

Natural medicine is not only safer than pharmaceutical medicine, it could also be more effective!

A new clinical trial, published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine has revealed that Turmeric is more effective in treating knee osteoarthritis than the pharmaceutical painkiller Ibuprofen. Proving that traditional, natural medicine can be more effective than modern, synthetic medicine.

109 patients with primary knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either ibuprofen 800 mg day ibuprofen (55 patients) or 2,000 mg turmeric per day (52 patients), for 6 weeks.

After six weeks, significant improvements were measured in both groups, but the turmeric group showed a better performance on the 100m walk and less pain going up and down a flight of stairs. The subjects rated themselves on the satisfaction of their treatment and the turmeric group scored 91.1% while the ibuprofen group rated themselves more than 10% less at 80.4%.

As well as the more positive short term benefits, users of turmeric as a treatment for inflammation will not experience the long term side effects which users of drugs such as ibuprofen will. Last year, ibuprofen was identified to be as toxic as the banned anti-inflammatory Vioxx, likely contributing to tens of thousands of deaths from cardiovascular disease each year.
