Major massacres in India by the Indians

How do the Indians feel about the massacre the Indians had done?:

I feel that such a list is not useful, unless it is categorized. Let me categorize things a bit for you and each category evokes a different emotion.

1. Massacre of Indians during Colonization:

Massacres after the battle of Panipat
Moplah Rebellion
Qissa Khwani Bazaar massacre
Jallianwala Bagh massacre
Mangalore Christian Massacre

A large majority of these were Hindus. It is a sad legacy of colonization and now you know why many Indians hate the colonization. Indian school books let you thus understand why it was nice for India to get independence in 1947.

2. Riots around the time of Partition

This accounts for 95%+ of all the massacre deaths in the list above. This is why leaders like Mahatma Gandhi so vehemently opposed partition. The partition was one that was forced on India by MA Jinnah. Again, we were the victims and I'm quite sad. I'm also quite saddened by the bloody takeover of Hyderabad - Hyderabad massacre of 1948. The Nizam and his mercenaries precluded any chance of a peaceful takeover.

3. Killing of Britishers during colonial rule

Bibighar massacre
Satichaura Ghat massacre
There were a couple of occasions where Indians massacred their colonial masters. I'm ashamed of these instances and I'm sorry for these people. The only solace is that despite these British soldiers were a lot safer in Indian than in most parts of the world, where the natives were even more aggressive. In India, we don't give enough attention to these episodes.

4. Hindu-Sikh troubles:

Hindus and Sikhs killed few 1000 of each other and this is among the saddest phases of Indian history. Thousands of Sikhs were massacred by Congress supporters right in the national capital. One of the saddest days in modern Indian history.
1984 anti-Sikh riots

Then there were a dozen massacres of Hindus by the Sikhs.
List of terrorist incidents in Punjab (India)
1991 Punjab killings

For this and the coming paragraphs, I put a big blame on Rajiv and thus I gave this title to him.Rajiv Gandhi: India's Worst Prime Minister

5. Massacre of Pandits in Kashmir

1998 Wandhama massacre
1998 Prankote massacre
1998 Chapnari massacre
2000 Amarnath pilgrimage massacre
2002 Qasim Nagar massacre
And a few more. The Hindu pandits were ethnically cleansed from Kashmir. Nearly half million of them live outside the state. The second most saddest time. Again, I'm very sad about it. A part of the blame should go to Rajiv, who inadvertently started the trouble in 1987 (see the article above).

6. Hindu-Muslim Riots

There are some sporadic violence between Hindus and Muslims.
Bombay Riots
1993 Bombay bombings
Godhra train burning
2002 Gujarat violence
Sopore massacre
Akshardham Temple attack
Marad Massacre
Nellie massacre
2006 Varanasi bombings
2010 Deganga riots
2012 Assam violence
2013 Canning riots
Go through the links and you will both sides have plenty to blame here. More than 70% of the riot victims in this category are the Muslims. However, the majority of the bombing victims are Hindus. Thus, the blame is equal. I'm more angry at government's handling of the law & order issue.

7. Massacre of Hindus in the Northeast

Mandai massacre
Bagber massacre
Christian terrorism in Tripura
There has been a few massacres of Hindus by various armed Christian groups in Tripura. I'm angry that the government has not made much steps to put an end to this menace. The Mandai one was especially brutal with skulls of children all over the place.

How should we react?

Now that I have categorized all the links in the page, you can start forming your opinions. Let us start the period after independence as the period before that was too sad.

  1. Despite being the majority community, Hindus have been the victims in more than half of the massacres. As a Hindu I'm sad for this as well as ashamed that in more than a quarter of the other instances Hindus were the villians.
  2. Historically, there was the extremely shameful Hindu-Sikh riots during Rajiv's regime. Hindus massacred 1000s of Sikhs in 1984 riots, while Sikhs bombed planes and trains killing 100s of Hindus. Fortunately, both sides are through with the cycle of violence and are much more peaceful now.
  3. Then there are plenty of Muslims and Hindus getting killed in riots and bombings. Hindu mobs ransacked Muslim communities on many occasions (Gujarat, Assam, Bombay) and Muslim mobs bombed Hindu communities & temples many times (Bombay, Akshardam, Amarnath, Varanasi). Our security infrastructure has to be significantly improved.
  4. There has been plenty of terrorism that is cleansing Hindus in J&K and Tripura. Most other Indians care nothing about it. This is a national security issue and stamp out the separatism and work hard on resettling these people back in their home land.

I'm sad, but also realistic. A nation with 1.3 billion people will have its criminals and the fact that total of such crimes over 3 centuries amount to just 0.1% of the present population is among the lowest in the world. And, even there 99% of those deaths involved Indians as victims - during the partition of India and during various parts of British rule.
