Teejan Bai: The Icon!
Here's an excerpt from The Hindu interview:
“….there was Pandavani everywhere: men of the village were constantly at it. The young Teejan had quietly resolved to do the same, though she did not realise its implications then.
“My mother was frustrated with my obsession. This is not for women, she would tell me hundred times a day. She would beat me, kick me, pull me by my hair and throw me out of the house for the whole night, starve me… but I was not the kind to budge. Not even hunger scared me. After her rage died down, she would gather me in an embrace and weep helplessly. I would also weep with her,” remembers Teejan Bai.
“Life in the village was not easy. It was very humiliating for my mother with a daughter like me,” she explains. She went to the well and people would taunt her, she went to the fields and women would nastily say, ‘like mother like daughter'. “What male-dominated society are we talking of? Women themselves are a big part of it,” Teejan Bai was married when she was barely six years old. By 12, her husband's family sent word of their refusal to accept a “singing-dancing” daughter-in-law, and by 13 Teejan Bai had given her first public performance. “My mother broke down when my marriage failed. What will happen to your sisters she cried. I felt sorry for her, but there was nothing called fear in my heart, ever. My mother soon realised that only God could rescue someone like me.”
Toaday Teejan Bai is an icon of Chhattisgarh!
Jogimara Caves: World's Oldest Amphitheatre:
Indian Dance forms are really very old. But where were they performed? At theatres like this:
Jogimara Caves are located in the Surguja District in the state of Chhattisgarh. These caves are around 10x6x6 feet in dimensions and age back to 300 BC.
Inscriptions on Jogimara cave walls
There are certain inscriptions on the walls of Jogimara Caves. These inscriptions are the messages of love and could be counted as world's first documented messages of love. The inscriptions are faded by now but whatever the message is legible tells us a story of the intense love between Sutnuka and Devdutta. According to some archaeological research Devdutta used to watch his beloved Sutnuka dancing in the theatre. It is believed by archaeologists that this story could be the root of the Devdasi concept.

Local wine prepared by fermenting the latex of Palm called Caryota urens. It is prepared only in the tribal regions due to the tree growing only in those regions. Any one who visits Bastar, returning without a bottle or two of Taadi is a sinner among friends in plains of Chhatisgarh!

There are certain inscriptions on the walls of Jogimara Caves. These inscriptions are the messages of love and could be counted as world's first documented messages of love. According to some archaeological research Devdutta used to watch his beloved Sutnuka dancing in the theatre. It is believed by archaeologists that this story could be the root of the Devdasi concept.
