What is the most annoying thing in my country?
The support of various events, things, people and ideologies based on half-baked knowledge or following a herd mentality.
For example, a lot of people tell me that this is the man to support for the next Indian PM (even my parents):
And from the small snippets I had heard about him in the news and from other people, I assumed he was what the nation needed: a strong, powerful, upright man who had done wonders in Gujarat.

But then I realized I actually know nothing about Narendra Modi that was fact, other than him being the CM of Gujarat and belonging to the BJP.
All that I knew was a conglomeration of some opinions from people that had as little knowledge as myself. From that day onwards I stopped being pro-Modi(or anti-Modi) till I got to know the man better.
But it is incredible how many people still spout opinions as if they were facts whilst knowing very little themselves.
News becoming a place for haranguing and embarrassing people in exchange for hits
For some time I was a fervent supporter of this man:
But watching him more and more I realized that he was nothing but a bully who would relentlessly harass his guests 'for answers' but then when they would indeed attempt to answer, he wouldn't let them speak.

He is loud, intimidating and overbearing, and certainly not conducive to good discussion. But people like him because he projects an image of really 'caring' and holding corrupt politicians accountable.
However, if you look closely, all you can hear is Goswami's ramblings and you will be hard-pressed to conclude what you learned from the discussion that you didn't know when you watched the 8 o clock news that previews the discussion that comes in the 9 o clock slot.
But generally do you remember a time when important news wasn't broken to you via people in splitscreens shouting incoherently at each other?
Do you remember a time when a reporter actually told you the news, as it was, without putting his own spin on the events?
That is why it is better to read the news. You can filter out the editorials and just read the facts if you want. On the TV, you will get the news but you'll have to sift through the self-righteous shouting bullshit instead.
Reactionary people and a reactionary government
In India nothing's bad till something goes wrong. The gangrape case, and the numerous rape cases that have followed have incurred bouts of anger and promises of reform but little has changed.

No politician is corrupt till a case against him is found. Everything is fine with China till it encroaches on our border.
Our intelligence our performing satisfactorily till the next terror attack happens. Then all criticism and hell will break lose. Why? Why not take proactive steps to fix something that we know will break instead of waiting till it breaks?
Caste-based reservation
Why does it still exist? I have seen SCs and STs who are better off than me and own much more valuable assets.

No doubt a lot of these people are economically and socially hampered, and India's duty as a secular democracy is to integrate them in society with minimum fuss.
But reservation makes more people opposed to the reserved castes, instead of helping them get integrated. It is because in situations for which merit is the only criteria, the SCs and STs get what is considered an unfair advantage.
And it is quite a substantial one.
Why not reserve seats the more logical way? That is, by reserving seats for BPL people, or people belonging to different economic classes? Isn't income a better indication of the challenges a person faces whilst pursuing education?
Or why not abolish reservation and give all backward classes free education in private and public schools instead? That way they get the same educational opportunities as the General category and compete with little injustice.
Why will none of this happen? Because of the SC and ST votebank, and their politicians. How ironical that democracy should get in the way of one of the primary democratic ideals.
