Why do the Kashmiris have problems with India?
I was travelling from Manali to Shimla, in a bus. I was probably the only person who wasn't from that region, and it seemed obvious because I was the only one carrying luggage - a rucksack and a backpack.
Somewhere in Mandi, three policemen entered the bus. They casually checked everyone's bags. Lastly, they came up to me (I was sitting on the third last seat (that's my spot)). I opened my backpack, making their job a little easier, and also so that we could save some time.
The first one casually checked it. Then the second one came and opened my rucksack. He took out all the things that were inside it and threw them all around. And then came the third one. He asked me where I am from, what am I doing here, since how long have I been travelling, where all have I been to in Himachal Pradesh, and what do I do. I answered all his questions, and then he started searching my pockets. And then, he ran his hands all over my body. Everywhere. It seemed like he was playing, and people in the bus were staring at me.
I've never been searched like that. Not in any of the airports that I've been to, not even at Wahgah Border security check.
They left without even helping me pack my rucksack.
They didn't do what they did to have fun. They did so because often foreigners visit Kasol (it's famous for some weed, and I, though not a foreigner, happened to have visited that place).
Now, before I answer the question, I ask y'all, what the officers did to me, was it right?
Kashmiris experience something similar all the time. The Indian Army is always suspicious towards them. Not because they want to, it's more of a precautionary measure.
Footnote: Before I experienced that near-strip search, I had asked an army officer, posted in Srinagar, on his thoughts on the hatred for the Indian Army by most Kashmiris. He told me that neither the Kashmiris, nor the Indian Army are wrong, it's the situation that is.
Edit: Read the comment made by Ankit Kumar.
Footnote: I'm from Calcutta.
