Kochi or Cochin is popularly known as the Queen of Arabian Sea,[1][2][3] also flaunts one of the finest natural harbours of the world.[4] and was the centre of the world spice trade for many centuries. Old Kochi loosely refers to a group of islands which comprise Willingdon Island, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, etc. Today Kochi includes Ernakulam city, old parts of Kochi, Kumbalangi, and outlying islands. It is one of the principal tourist destinations of Kerala. The city derives its name from the Malayalam word Kochazhi meaning small lagoon.

Attractions[edit]

  • Backwaters of Kochi are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as theMalabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India. In Cochin, the stretch from Kochi Azhi to Munambam Azhi, the serene backwaters are popularly known as Veeranpuzha. It is the northern extension of Vembanad Lake. Vembanad Lake (Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol) is India's longest lake,[5] and is the largest lake in Kerala. It is also one of the largest lakes in India.
  • Marine Drive is a picturesque promenade in Kochi. It is built facing the backwaters, and is a popular hangout for the local populace. Marine Drive is also an economically thriving part of the city of Kochi. With several shopping malls it is as an important centre of shopping activity in Kochi. The walkway has two contemporarily constructed bridges, the Rainbow bridge and the Chinese Fishing Net Bridge.The view of the setting and rising sun over the sea mouth, and the gentle breeze from the Vembanad Lake has made Marine Drive an important tourist destination in Kochi. Hundreds of people (both natives, and tourists) throng the walkway during the evenings.
  • Hill Palace : is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala, near Tripunithura.[6] It was the administrative office of Kochi Rajas. Built in 1865, the Palace complex consists of 49 buildings in the traditional architectural style, spreading across in 54 acres (220,000 m2). The complex has an archaeological Museum, a Heritage Museum, a Deer Park, a prehistoric park and a children's park.[7]
  • Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, in Mattancherry, Kochi, features Kerala murals depicting Hindu temple art, portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi.Mattancherry Palace with its medieval charm is situated at Palace Road, Mattancherry, Kochi. It was built by the Portuguese and presented to Veera Kerala Varma (1537–65), Raja of Kochi, in 1555 AD.The palace is a quadrangular structure built in Nālukettu style, the traditional Kerala style of architecture, with a courtyard in the middle. In the courtyard there stands a small temple dedicated to 'Pazhayannur Bhagavati', the protective goddess of the Kochi royal family. There are two more temples on either side of the Palace, one dedicated to Lord Krishnaand the other to Lord Siva. Certain elements of architecture, as for example the nature of its arches and the proportion of its chambers are indicative of European influence in basic Nāluketttu style.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (locally known as Kaloor International Stadium) is an international stadium in Kochi, Kerala,India. With a capacity to hold 60,000 spectators, the stadium was built in 1996. Originally constructed as a football stadium, it has played host to a number of international cricket and football matches. The extensive grounds of the stadium serve as venue for important exhibitions, cinema events and political rallies in the city. The stadium is quipped with floodlights for night play. The architecture of the stadium is unique compared to other stadia in India.
  • Jewish Synagogue : or the Paradesi Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations,[8] located in Kochi in South India. It was built in 1568 by the Malabar Yehudan people or Cochin Jewish community in the Kingdom of Cochin. It is also referred to as the Cochin Jewish Synagogue or the Mattancherry Synagogue. The synagogue is located in the quarter of Old Cochin known as Jew Town,[8] and is the only one of the seven synagogues in the area still in use. The complex has four buildings. It was built adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace temple on the land given to the Malabari Yehuden community by the Raja of Kochi, RamaVarma. The Mattancherry Palace temple and the Mattancherry synagogue share a common wall.
  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica : a church built originally by the Portuguese and elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558, was spared by the Dutch conquerors who destroyed many Catholic buildings. Later the British demolished the structure and Bishop Dom Gomez Vereira commissioned a new building in 1887. Consecrated in 1905, Santa Cruz was proclaimed a Basilica by the Pope John Paul II in 1984. This magnificent church is a must see destination for tourists who come to Kochi.
  • Bolgatty Palace : Built by the Dutch in India, it is located in the scenic island popularly known as Bolgatty island in Kochi. One of the oldest existing Dutch palaces outside Holland, this quaint mansion, built in 1744, by Dutch traders, was later extended and lush green gardens were landscaped around it. The building was then the Governor's palace for the Dutch and later in 1909 was leased to the British. It served as the home of the British Governors, the seat of the British Resident of Cochin during the British regime. In 1947, when India gained independence, the palace became the property of the state and later converted into a heritage hotel resort.
  • Kochi International Marina: Kochi, nevertheless is an excellent stop for yachts, and the marina is placed ideally within the city, attached to the shoreline of the historic Bolgatty Palace Hotel in Bolgatty Island.
  • Willingdon Island : A man-made island named after Lord Willingdon a former British Viceroy to India. Southern Naval Command, Cochin Harbour, Port Trust headquarters, Best hotels in the city, major trading centers etc. are situated at Willingdon Island.
  • Museum of Kerala History: Important scenes of Kerala history are portrayed through sculptures. Greeting the visitor outside the museum is a statue of Parasurama, the mythological sage who is said to have created Kerala. Contemporary Art Gallery, Dolls Collection, Art Exhibition Space etc. are the other attractions. Kerala Museum is located at NH Edappally.
  • St.Francis Church: originally built in 1503, is the oldest European church in India[9][10] and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent.[11]

Around Kochi[edit]

  • Athirappilly Falls : is in the neighboring Thrissur district and is around 60 km from Kochi. The Chalakudy River,145 kilometres (90 mi) long, originates in the Anamudi mountains (Western Ghats)[12] and flows through the Vazhachal Forest toward the Arabian Sea. Forest wildlife includes the Asiatic elephanttigerleopardbisonsambar, and lion-tailed macaque. Plantations in the area contain teakbamboo, and eucalyptus. The river initially runs smoothly but becomes more turbulent as it nears Athirappilly. At Athirappilly Falls, the water surges around big rocks and cascades down in three separate plumes. Below the falls, the river remains turbulent for about 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) until it reaches Kannamkuzhi. Then it calms and flows smoothly until reaching the dam at Imburmuzhi.
  • Cherai Beach : is a beach is just 30 km from Kochi. The 15 km of long golden beach is shallow, and attracts swimming and sunbathing. Cherai village is a part of Vypin Island.
  • Kalady : is a popular pilgrim center because it is the birthplace of Sri Adi Sankara, one of India's foremost philosopher-saints who preached the Advaita or monastic philosophy.
  • Bhoothathankettu : is a dam and tourist site. It is situated in the village of Pindimana, about 50 km from the Kochi. Bhoothathankettu is connected to the Salim Ali/Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, where visitors can see different varieties of birds and animals. The Idamalayam reservoir is about 12 km distance from the site.
  • Chottanikkara Temple : is a famous temple of the Hindu mother goddess Bhagawati. Bhagawati is one of the most popular deities in the area, and she is worshipped at the temple, along with Lord Vishnu, in three different forms: as Saraswati in the morning, draped in white; as Bhadrakali at noon, draped in crimson; and as Durga in the evening, decked in blue. 'Chottanikara Magam' is the famous religious festival in the temple.
  • Paliam Palace,Chendamangalam : It is about 42 km from Kochi. The Paliam Palace, residence of the Paliath Achans, hereditary Prime Ministers to the former Maharajas of Kochi, is one of the architectural splendours of Kerala. The Palace is over 450 years old and houses a collection of historic documents and relics.
  • Malayattoor : is one of the most prominent Christian pilgrim centers in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. The Malayatoor Church of Cochin attracts a large number of devotees from not just Kerala, but also all over India.St. Thomas is believed to have landed in Kerala at Kodungallur (Cranganore) in AD 52. Oral tradition says that while travelling through Malayattor, faced with hostile natives, he fled to the hilltop where he is said to have remained in prayer and that he left his foot prints on one of the rocks. According to beliefs, during prayer, he touched a rock, upon which blood poured from it.
  • Kadamattom Orthodox Church : is one of the most famous churches in India. The church is built around 10th Century AD in Indo-Persian architecture. The church is famous from a priest - "Kadamattathu kattanar" who was famous for his supernatural powers. The church also possess an ancient Persian Cross in one of its Madbaha walls. Poyedam Well and chapel is also another tourist attraction.This Church is under the Kandanad West Diocese of Orthodox Church.

Presently the palace has been converted into a museum by The Kerala State Archaeology Department and is open to public all days except Mondays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The palace is about 12 km from Ernakulam mainland and approachable by road and rail.
  • KANDANAD ST. MARY'S ORTHODOX CHURCH
Kandanad Church is the oldest church which is situated in the suburbans of Kochi. Most beautiful altar works can be seen here. This church is in the administration of Orthodox Church.There is the tomb of the successor of St.Thomas the Apostle, Marthoma IV. He was ruling the whole Church by staying in this church as Headquarters.

The easiest accessible island from the capital is the Havelock . Ross Island :
One of the most exotic of all the strings of islands in the Andaman & Nicobar group is the famous Ross Island, which stands guard at the mouth of Port Blair harbor. Ross island was the symbol of power during the erstwhile British Raj, named after the British surveyor Reginald Ross, this desolate island was transformed into a thriving township when the british established a penal colony on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the year 1858. In all about 500 personnel including officers, troops, Indian merchants and families lived at Ross Island.

This island derives its name from the vessel ‘viper' in which Lt. Archibold Blair came to the islands in 1768 with the purpose of establishing a penal settlement. The Dangerous convicts found guilty of violating the rules of the penal settlement, were put in fetters and were forced to work with their fetters on in this island.
Sher Ali was given life imprisonment during the Wahabi movement against the British Raj. He assassinated lord mayo, viceroy of India with a knife on 8 th Feb. 1872. He was hanged on Viper Island.

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park :
The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor is at a distance of 29kms from Port Blair covering an area of around 281.5 sq kms. The fascinating world of tropical dense rain forests, the sandy beaches and clear blue waters offer excellent sight to the eyes. Red Skin Island and Jolly Buoy Islands are two of the many islands in this park with nice beaches and spectacular under sea views of corals and marine life, where you can indulge in activities such as snorkeling, bathing, etc.

Chatham Island :
It has a sawmill lying on the tiny island connected by a bridge over a stretch of sea-water. This saw mill is one of the biggest and oldest in Asia. The main island harbor is also here. The other harbor is haddo, which is nearby.
Barren Island :
India's only active volcano is situated in Barren Island. It is just 120 kms away from port Blair. This tiny, circular island covers an area of 8 sq. kms. Barren Island's active volcano erupted twice recently in 1991 and 1994-95 after a period of 177 years. Tourists are allowed to visit this island only on board vessels. Landing on this island is not permitted.
Neil Island :
Neil is one of the islands chosen by the government to turn into a luxurious tourist destination. The coral reef here is still intact and is what makes snorkeling a great pleasure here. This island is situated just 36kms away from port Blair. This island is also called the vegetable bowl of Andaman. It provides an ideal holiday for eco-friendly tourists. The center of the town is the lively Aberdeen Bazaar. Constructed entirely of wood, it has been razed to the ground several times in the past. However, every time, reconstruction was completed in no time and now it is as colorful as ever. Port Blair is the only place to do some sightseeing.

Mount Harriot was the summer headquarters of the chief commissioner during british raj. It is the highest peak around Port Blair and offers a breath taking view of sunsets and sunrises. It is also situated at 365 meters above sea level and it is an ideal spot for picnic and trekking. It can be reached by road or by ferry.
Chidiya tapu :
Chidiya tapu, also known as bird's island, is an ideal picnic spot, with its lush green mangroves, picturesque beach and creeks. It is the southmost tip of south andaman. The lush green mangroves, forest cover with numerous chirping birds and the sylvan sands and munda pahar beaches make it an ideal picnic site. It is around 25kms from Port Blair. The forest guesthouse situated on top of a hillock provides a fabulous view of the isolated islands, submerged corals and the breath-taking sunset.

It is situated just 7kms from Port Blair. Carbyn's cove beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming, etc. It is the only nearest beach situated near Port Blair.

Anthropological Museum :
The anthropological museum was set up at Port Blair to document, preserve and display the cultural heritage of the people of these islands. The pre-colonial inhabitants of these islands were the great andamanese, onges, jarawas, sentinelese, shompens, and the nicobarese. This museum depicts the life of the tribes of these islands.
Samudrika :
This is a navel marine museum which displays the corals, fishes, animals found in these islands. The museum displays shells, corals, oceanic regime, marine archeology, etc. Many rare and uncommon shells and corals are on display in this museum.
Fisheries museum : 
The museum displays species of marine life found in the waters of these islands.
Forest museum : 
The museum displays decorative pieces made of various types of timber found in these islands.


Little Andaman :
It is situated just 129 kms from port Blair. This island has a beautiful waterfall. The hut bay is the name of the beach situated here.

Cellular Jail :
The cellular jail is the most important tourist spot in andaman and nicobar islands.The British constructed the cellular jail in 1906 where they imprisoned many freedom fighters during India's struggle for independence. It was declared as a national memorial after independence in 1947,and it now houses a museum and an art gallery and holds sound and light show in the evening. The saga of the heroic freedom struggle is brought alive in this famous sound and light show, shown daily inside the jail premises at 6.00pm[Hindi] and 7.15 pm [English].
National movement were flaring up against the British rule all over India and the freedom fighters related to these movements were sent to Andaman's with long sentences. Prominent among those were from the Mopla rebellion [1792-1947], Wahabi movement [1830-1869], Tharawadi peasant rebellion, Burma [1930] etc.
The construction of cellular jail was started in 1896 and completed in 1906 with 698 cells. The jail was constructed with seven wings, spreading out like a seven-petal flower in its centre and it had a tower with a turret. The three-storey and seven wings building connected the turret.

Nicobar Islands :
The Nicobar Islands are separated from the Andaman Islands by the ten-degree channel. It comprises of 28 islands measuring about 1841 sq .kms. The Nicobar Islands are abounding in coconut palm, casuarinas, pandanus, etc. The giant robber crab, monkeys with long tail, nicobari pigeon, megapode are found in Nicobar Islands. The south most part of India, the Indira point is found in great Nicobar. Foreigners are not allowed to visit this island. Indians are also given permission only in exceptional cases.
